Leeds care home gets a splash of colour courtesy of Interflora
Florists in Bradford, florists in York and those from all over Yorkshire will no doubt have been green with envy when a care home in nearby Leeds was the talk of the flower world recently.
There was genuine excitement among the residents at Headingley Hall Care Home when part of an award-winning exhibition from this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show ended up in the well-known Leeds superb after being given away in a competition run by Interflora, the UK’s flower experts.
Kath Johnstone was the lucky winner of one of the nine floral doorways that formed David Denyer’s “A Sense of Perspective” display and duly donated it to the care home in which she works.
Denyer, who picked up a Gold Medal at the Chelsea Flower Show for his green-fingered exploits, made the journey up to Yorkshire to rebuild the doorway, much to the delight of residents.
Johnstone told BBC Radio Leeds: “I thought it would be really lovely to share it with all the residents. It’s such a unique prize; we’re just thrilled for everybody here. We’ve been counting down the days until David could come to put the exhibition up. It’s a little bit of Chelsea coming to Headingly Hall.
“I go to a lot of flower shows and I love Interflora and their flowers, so I was tracking David to see if he’d won the gold at Chelsea. I then saw the competition to win a doorway and entered.”
Describing the doorway, Interflora florist Denyer said in an interview with BBC Radio Leeds: “The idea is to merge all of Chelsea in one doorway using reds, oranges, pinks and purples. I’ve used hydrangeas, alliums, gerberas and some unusual anthuriums. It should last nicely.”
He added: “It’s been a few weeks since Chelsea, so it’s quite fun to see it all again.”
Denyer said back in May when he scooped his Gold Medal: “This is a fantastic accolade and is a testimony to the team here at Interflora who provide florists such as myself with the opportunity and platform to demonstrate our real design credentials and floral creativity.”
The display in total featured thousands of flowers of all shapes, sizes and colours, with the nine doorways all towering some seven feet tall. Putting the nine doorways together made for quite a floral statement that clearly hit the right note with the judges and with some many flowers Norwich visitors to Chelsea Flower Show and other fellow green-fingered enthusiasts from around the UK were also impressed.
